A Quick Look at Yurt Camping at Cape Disappointment State Park

Don’t have a lot of time? Here is a quick Itinerary for a winter weekend in Cape Disappointment State Park

Where is Cape Disappointment?

Cape Disappointment is down in the southwestern corner of Washington, right where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. It’s part of Cape Disappointment State Park, which is on the Long Beach Peninsula.

The area is pretty incredible, with stunning coastal views, thick forests, and cool spots like the Deadman’s Cove. It’s perfect for hiking, beach walks, or just enjoying the beauty of the rugged coastline.

Why is it called Cape Disappointment?

Ok, this place is anything but disappointing, but why the name?

It’s called Cape Disappointment because when British explorer John Meares sailed there in 1788, he was hoping to find the entrance to the Columbia River. But when he arrived, he was disappointed to find that the river’s mouth was blocked by fog and strong currents. He didn’t get the easy access he was expecting, so he named it “Cape Disappointment.”

But now it’s a beautiful spot to visit!

The Yurts

Why go Yurt camping at Cape Disappointment in the Winter? For starters, they come with all the essentials to keep you cozy during winter camping. Picture this: heaters, beds, a table and chairs, and electricity for charging devices or plugging in your favorite little camping gadgets.

The yurts at Cape Disappointment State Park are 16 feet in diameter, offering a cozy and functional space with electric heat, lights, and locking doors. Inside, you’ll find a bunk bed that sleeps three, a futon couch for two, and a small end table for convenience. Heated bathrooms and showers are located nearby.

All you really need!

Outside the yurt, there’s a picnic table and a fire pit with a grate, perfect for cooking! Just to note, cooking inside the yurts is not permitted.

Each yurt can accommodate up to five guests. Guests are required to bring their own bed linens as they are not provided.

Pro-tip: The interiors are a little bare, but all you need are a few extra blankets and sheets to make it feel like home. Trust me—it’ll be as cozy as your living room, but closer to the beach!

Things to Do Near Your Yurt

A weekend Yurt Camping at Cape Disappointment in Washington would not be complete without some activities. Here is a list of all amazing things to do to round out your weekend!

🥾 Walk to Benson Beach

The beach is just 300-400 feet from most yurts, so you can easily stroll over to watch the sunset or enjoy some fun family time playing on the beach. There are waves to chase, rocks to climb and the occasional big log to hang out on.

Don’t miss the chance to take in the beautiful coastal skies as the sun sets behind the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse.

This spot feels like your own private island! Play on the beach, chase waves, and explore the area—it’s a peaceful slice of paradise perfect for a family adventure or a little solo downtime. It’s also a beautiful hike through coastal forest, with sections that cross a bluff offering stunning views.

🌅 Watch the Sunrise at Waikiki Beach

Start your day early by catching the sunrise at Waikiki Beach. Its pretty close to the Yurts and worth the early wake up call. This is the spot where all the photographers come during the King Tide to capture the huge swells.

There is a long rock jetty that you can sit on to watch the sunrise.

Get Ice Cream at Scooper’s in Long Beach

After a morning of exploration, head to Long Beach for an ice cream and some time on Long Beach! Scooper’s is the perfect stop to grab some ice cream and indulge in the laid-back vibe of the area. And holy moly are these the biggest ice cream cones!

Seriously HUGE portions.

🥾 Watch the Sunset on Long Beach

End your day by catching the sunset on Long Beach. It’s the perfect spot to take in the last light of the day while enjoying the vast ocean view. The long boardwalk and vast dunes were a hit with our kids. We played hide and seek along the trails in the dunes.

The beach is pretty quiet in winter, but you can still find people clamming (check the seasonal dates if you are interested) or flying kites on this beach. You are also allowed to drive on this beach – my kids found this fascinating.

🥾 Explore the Lighthouses

Cape Disappointment is home to two iconic lighthouses: the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse and the North Head Lighthouse. Both are stunning, offering amazing views of the coast and a taste of maritime history.

Whether you’re hiking to them or admiring them from the beach, the lighthouses are a must-see.

What to Bring for Your Yurt Camping Weekend
