BEST GOLDEN LARCH HIKES IN WASHINGTON in the FALL
Fall in Washington is truly a special seasonal experience. One standout feature is the transformation of larch trees into vibrant displays of GOLDENESS. A few weeks into Fall, these deciduous conifers turn from their usual green into brilliant shades of gold.
To make the most of this season, I’ve compiled a list of the best golden larch hikes in Washington. (in no particular order) A list of hiking trails that should be on every adventurer’s list. Each trail offers views and opportunities to experience the larches in their full autumn goldenness. (Yes, I am obsessed with this term!)
Whether you’re seeking a challenging hike or a shorter more approachable hike there is something for everyone on this list.
WHAT ARE LARCHES?
Larch trees are unique conifers that shed their needles each fall. Before they drop their needles, they change into a stunning golden yellow/ orange creating a striking contrast against the surrounding evergreen forest of Washington.
WHERE CAN YOU FIND LARCHES?
Larches thrive in the higher elevations and rugged terrains of the Pacific Northwest, often above 3,500 feet.
When do Larches typically peak in Washington?
Every year is different but typically the last week in September and the first two weeks in October. I have found the first two weeks in October to be the sweet spot. This of course varies on elevation due to temperature difference.
What is a “Larch March”?
The “Larch March” is essentially a hike thats main goal is to see golden larches. “Larch March” is a term born out of the hiking community’s enthusiasm for the striking fall colors of larch trees.
How to Determine If Golden Larches Are at Their Peak:
- Check Current Trip Reports: For up-to-date information on golden larches, review trip reports on AllTrails or the Washington Trails Association website. Look at popular spots like Maple Pass Loop (North Cascades), and Blue Lake, they are more likely to have a current trip report. Photos and details about current conditions in the comments, will giving you a clear idea of the color status.
- Contact the Ranger Stations or Visitor Centers: Reach out to local ranger stations or visitor centers in the area you plan to visit.
- Explore Social Media: Social media platforms like Instagram, and Facebook are excellent for finding recent images and videos of golden larches. Search for hashtags or check posts from other hikers for the most current visuals and information.
- Facebook groups: Large groups like Washington Hikers and Climbers often have photo updates.

Okay, here we go. The list of epic hikes…
Eagle Lakes – #1 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington
This is one of those hikes that, once you’ve experienced it, will linger in your memory for a long time. The number of larches here is simply unreal – endless fields of gold against an aqua alpine lake stretching as far as the eye can see. Its not a one hit wonder, the water color and the surrounding peaks are equally stunning.
Pro- tip. If you have a few days to spare, you can connect this trail with the Golden Lakes Loop. Hands down, one of the best (permit free) backpacking experiences in Washington.

Cutthroat Pass – #2 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington
This trail is one of my favorites in the North Cascades National Park, especially in mid to late fall. It’s a perfect “Larch March”. And it also boasts views for miles.
This trail is less crowded than the popular Maple Pass Loop Trail nearby, (across the street) offering a little more solitude. It’s an excellent choice for those seeking both golden larches and some quiet.
It’s a bit of a drive from Seattle, located on Highway 20 near Washington Pass, but worth the time.

Harts Pass – via Windy Pass via the PCT – #3 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington
Harts Pass is much lesser-known for larches than a lot of the other areas in the North Cascades. It really is still a hidden gem. We had the trails nearly to ourselves, providing a great escape from the crowds on Highway 20.
The drive up to Harts Pass to hike either Windy Pass, or Grasshopper Pass is not for the faint at heart. BUT since most of the elevation gain is completed by car, the hikes up there are relatively gentle, making it accessible for almost everyone.
Harts Pass – Windy Pass via the PCT Overview
- Location: North Cascades National Park

Wing Lake – #4 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington
Wing Lake is probably my favorite larch hike on the list. The golden larches line the lake’s edge glow as the sun comes up and it is incredible. Instead of a day hike, I highly recommend backpacking here. Make sure to wake up for sunrise and head up towards Black Peak, the view is OOTW!
Lewis Lake along the way is a destination of itself. And a great place to take a break or eat some lunch. Definitely a must-visit!
Pro-tip: when you cross the boulder field; stick close to the tree line for an easier dirt path.

Cooney Lake – #5 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington
I hiked to Cooney Lake while backpacking the Golden Lakes Loop leaving from the Crater Creek Trailhead. I found the hike to the lake rather boring and would recommend starting at the Foggy Dew Ridge Trailhead. It tends to be busy and the hike to Cooney lake is much more scenic.
Once you get to the lake, the larches here are endless! The lakes shoreline has many great spots to either have lunch or set up a tent!
Pro-tip: If you continue past the lake towards Angels Staircase and look back, you are in for an even greater treat. The view is all GOLD.

Blue Lake – #6 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington
When Blue Lake is calm, its clear, and the tranquil waters beautifully reflect the golden larches. (and the surrounding rugged mountain peaks) This creates a breathtaking setting – with so MANY photo opportunities.
Despite its beauty, the hike to Blue Lake is relatively accessible, making it a favorite among North Cascades trails. Definitely plan to arrive early to this hike or show up later in the day. It gets crowded.

Crater Lakes – #7 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington
Out of all the hikes in the Lake Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness area Crater Lakes offers the most “wow” for the effort. It’s a trail for almost everyone! It features a very gentle slope and is relatively short trail. Lots of bang. I’m not sure why it doesn’t get more attention, as it’s often overshadowed by the nearby Golden Lakes Loop.
Pro-tip: The trail technically ends at the lower lake, but be sure to follow the path around the lake and up to the second lake—it’s the real star here. It’s a dream painted in GOLD. This hike also makes for a wonderful beginner backpacking trip!

This hike was, in a word, FREEZING the day I went. It was windy, cold, and overcast, but still beautiful. I can’t imagine what it looks like on a “nicer” day! It definitely has all the ingredients for a perfect fall larch hike.
Before you reach the lake, you pass through Merchants Basin, and the colors in the basin will take your breath away. Unlike some of the other hikes in this area, this one offers a lot to see along the way as well as at the lake itself.

Goat Peak Lookout – #10 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington
Located east of Mazama on the eastern side of the North Cascades, Goat Peak Lookout should be on every larch march list. At 3.3 miles with an elevation gain of 1,443 feet, the hike is suitable for pretty much anyone. And especially great for families!
The lookout is fun to walk around, and the ridge line covered in larches adds to the hikes appeal in the Fall. The impressive views make this trail worthwhile year-round, but I would argue its the best in Autumn.
Pro-tip: this is a great spot for sunset, just be sure to pack a headlamp for the descent.

Copper Glance Lake – #11 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington
Copper Glance Lake, is renowned for its blue-green waters—an almost unreal emerald hue. However, the real magic happens in the fall, when the larches transform into a vibrant golden spectacle.
As the larches don their brilliant yellow needles, they create a stunning contrast against the deep green of the lake and the rugged, mountainous backdrop. On calm days, the lake’s reflection is nothing short of surreal. It perfectly mirrors the golden larches and making the scene resemble a sheet of glass.

The base of Asgard pass is lined with yellow in the fall making for quite the sight! And don’t just stop at edge of the lake once you arrive, definitely make your way around to the other end. You might even bump into a mountain goat!

Core Enchantments – #13 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington
For me, this hike is one of the absolute best fall adventures in Washington State, especially if you’re a larch enthusiast. While it’s also one of the most challenging hikes, the reward is unparalleled.
Like many others, I applied for a permit to backpack in the Enchantments, only to face disappointment due to the highly competitive lottery, with only 2% of applicants securing a permit. However, this setback can actually present an opportunity to opt for a day hike instead.
Keep in mind that tackling this trail as a day hike requires significant training and experience. It’s a long and demanding trek, but the breathtaking display of golden larches and autumn beauty makes it an unforgettable experience.
