Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

Fall in Washington is unparalleled. Truly a one of a kind Fall experience. One of the standout features is the transformation of larch trees into vibrant displays of GOLDENESS. A few weeks into Fall these deciduous conifers turn from their usual green into brilliant shades of gold. To make the most of this season, I’ve compiled a list of the best golden larch hikes in Washington. (in no particular order) A list of hiking trails that should be on every adventurer’s list. Each trail offers views and opportunities to experience the larches in their full autumn goldenness. (Yes, I am obsessed with this term!)

Whether you’re seeking a challenging hike or a shorter more approachable hike there is something for everyone on this list. These trails promise to showcase some of the best of Washington’s larch trees.

What are Larches?

Larch trees are unique conifers that shed their needles each fall. During the fall, the larch needles before they drop, change into a stunning golden yellow. This brilliant transformation creates an incredibly striking contrast against the backdrop of the surrounding evergreen forest of Washington. The golden needles are particularly spectacular when set against snowy landscapes, making larch trees a highlight in the fall. And if you are lucky, if it snows, what feels like the early winter.

These trees, which include species like the Western Larch and the Alpine Larch, are known for their vibrant display of color as autumn approaches.

Where can you find Larches?

Larches thrive in the higher elevations and rugged terrains of the Pacific Northwest, adding a splash of gold to the alpine and subalpine environments. Often above 3,500 feet, where they thrive in well-drained, rocky soils.

When do Larches typically peak in Washington?

Every year is different but typically the last week in September and the first two weeks in October. I have found the first week in October to be the sweet spot. This of course varies on elevation due to temperature difference.

What is a “Larch March”?

The “Larch March” is essentially a hike thats main goal is to see golden larches. “Larch March” is a term born out of the hiking community’s enthusiasm for the striking fall colors of larch trees. Combining a play on words with these beautiful trees.

How to Determine If Golden Larches Are at Their Peak:

  • Check Current Trip Reports: For up-to-date information on golden larches, review trip reports on AllTrails or Washington Trails Association website. Look for recent hikes to popular spots like Maple Pass Loop (North Cascades), and Blue Lake. Because they are so popular, there are often many current trip reports. Hikers tend to share photos and details about current conditions in the comments, giving you a clear idea of the larches’ status.
  • Contact the Ranger Stations or Visitor Centers: Reach out to local ranger stations or visitor centers in the area you plan to visit. They can provide the latest updates on the larches’ condition and peak viewing times.
  • Explore Social Media: Social media platforms like Instagram, and Facebook are excellent for finding recent images and videos of golden larches. Search for hashtags or check posts from other hikers for the most current visuals and information. Also check out popular Facebook groups like Washington Hikers and Climbers.

Eagle Lakes – #1 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

This is one of those hikes that, once you’ve experienced it, will linger in your memory for a long time. The amount of larches here is simply unreal – endless fields of golden larches stretching as far as the eye can see. Seriously.

The water color is striking, and the surrounding peaks are equally stunning. When you add the vibrant yellow larches for miles around, it just unreal.

Cutthroat Pass – #2 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

This trail is one of my favorites in North Cascades National Park, especially in mid to late fall when it’s adorned with larches. It’s perfect for a “Larch March”. I hiked it late in the season with a light dusting of snow, and the scene felt like a fairytale.

Though it’s a bit of a drive from Seattle, located on Highway 20 near Washington Pass, some hikes are worth the journey, and this one is certainly among them.

Moreover, this trail is less crowded than the popular Maple Pass Loop Trail nearby, offering a little more solitude. It’s an excellent choice for those seeking both golden larches and some quiet.

Harts Pass – via Windy Pass via the PCT – #3 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

We set out for a weekend getaway in the North Cascades, staying in the coziest cabin for some family hiking. Although our initial plan was to tackle the renowned Maple Pass Loop, our cabin host suggested Harts Pass, which, as it turned out, was a hidden gem. Consequently, we were thrilled to discover that the trails were nearly to ourselves, providing a peaceful escape from the crowds on Highway 20. Thus, if you’re seeking a serene autumn adventure, Harts Pass is definitely worth the detour.

This area is a larch enthusiast’s dream, offering breathtaking views and an abundance of golden larches. The drive up to Harts Pass, Windy Pass, or Grasshopper Pass rewards you with stunning larch displays. Furthermore, you can easily access the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from various points along the road. Since most of the elevation gain is completed by car, the hike itself is relatively gentle, making it accessible for almost everyone.

Ultimately, for a larch-filled paradise with spectacular views and a tranquil hiking experience, this area is simply unbeatable!

Wing Lake – #4 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

In the fall, Wing Lake is truly spectacular. The golden larches lining the lake’s edge, resembling an infinity pool, create a breathtaking scene.

To reach Wing Lake, start on the Maple Pass Loop Trail from the Rainy Pass trailhead. Follow the trail counterclockwise as it ascends through lush forest, offering occasional views. After about two miles, you’ll come to a junction with a trail branching right. This marks the start of the more scenic portion of the hike.

Soon, you’ll cross a boulder field; stick close to the tree line for an easier path. After passing the beautiful Lewis Lake, the trail steepens and leads through a stunning larch grove. In fall, the colorful larches provide a delightful distraction from the climb. The final stretch to Wing Lake is challenging but rewarding, with the lake’s pristine beauty making it all worthwhile. Definitely a must-visit!

Cooney Lake – #5 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

I hiked to Cooney Lake while backpacking the Golden Lakes Loop, which is an all-around stunner if you have the time. Watching the sunset and sunrise from the lakeside as I set up my tent was incredible. The larches here are endless, adding to the charm of the location. Moreover, if you continue past the lake towards Angels Staircase and look back, you are in for an even greater treat.

This lake is simply magical, and in the fall, it transforms into a serious display of golden hues. Overall, the experience is definitely worth every step.

Blue Lake – #6 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

Blue Lake is an outstanding fall hike in Washington, particularly for those who appreciate the striking beauty of larches. The sight of these golden larches set against the lake’s pristine blue waters creates a stunning and vibrant contrast that is simply magical.

When the lake is calm, its clear, tranquil waters beautifully reflect the golden larches and the rugged mountain peaks surrounding it. This creates a breathtakingly serene setting and offers fantastic photo opportunities.

Despite its beauty, the hike to Blue Lake is relatively accessible, making it a favorite among North Cascades trails. The spectacular display of fall larches, combined with the scenic lake and mountain backdrop, ensures that this hike remains a favorite!

Crater Lakes – #7 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

Out of all the hikes in the Lake Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness area, I would recommend this one for almost everyone! It features a gentle slope and is relatively short for all that it offers. I’m not sure why it doesn’t get more attention, as it’s often overshadowed by the nearby Golden Lakes Loop.

There are two lakes: the upper and lower. The trail technically ends at the lower lake, but be sure to follow the path around the lake and up to the second lake—it’s the real star here. It’s a dream painted in GOLD. This hike also makes for a wonderful beginner backpacking trip!

Carne Mountain – #8 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

To me, this is one of the most EPIC larch hikes in all of Washington. I had put it off for a few seasons, and I have no idea why! It absolutely blew me away. The larches were at their peak, and they were EVERYWHERE—a golden forest. The views go on for miles in every direction; it’s simply stunning!

Its a thigh burner for sure but really worth every step. And if you cant make it to the top of Carne, the basin is also magic!

Sunrise Lake- #9 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

This hike was, in a word, FREEZING the day I went. It was windy, cold, and overcast, but still beautiful. I can’t imagine what it looks like on a “nicer” day! It definitely has all the ingredients for a perfect fall larch hike.

Before you reach the lake, you pass through Merchants Basin, and the colors took my breath away. Unlike some of the other hikes in this area, this one offers a lot to see along the way as well as at the lake itself. And at the right time of year, it’s all GOLD!

Goat Peak Lookout – #10 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

This short and enjoyable fall hike, located east of Mazama on the eastern side of the North Cascades, is ideal for larch fanatics like me, haha. The trail leads to a fire tower surrounded by golden larches, offering sweeping views of the mountains. The spot is great for sunset, with the larches and mountains for miles. Just be sure to pack a headlamp for the descent.

At 3.3 miles with an elevation gain of 1,443 feet, the hike is suitable for both solo adventurers and families. The lookout is fun to walk around, and the ridge line covered in larches adds to the hike’s fall appeal. The impressive views make this trail worthwhile year-round, but I would argue its the best in Autumn.

Copper Glance Lake – #11 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

This hike has consistently captivated my attention on social media, leaving me eager to explore its location. Copper Glance Lake, in particular, is renowned for its blue-green waters—an almost unreal emerald hue. However, the real magic happens in the fall, when the larches transform into a vibrant golden spectacle, making it quite the sight!

As the larches don their brilliant yellow needles, they create a stunning contrast against the deep green of the lake and the rugged, mountainous backdrop. On calm days, the lake’s reflection is nothing short of surreal. It perfectly mirrors the golden larches and making the scene resemble a sheet of glass.

The trail itself offers a dynamic experience. Much of the hike meanders through an area previously burned but now alive with new growth and, depending on the season, an abundance of wildflowers. Midway up the trail, you’ll also find an old mine, adding a touch of historical intrigue to your adventure. With its vibrant fall larch displays and varied natural features, this hike promises a captivating and visually spectacular journey.

Colchuck Lake – #12 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

This hike more than any other in Washington really doesnt need an introduction. Its spectacular, and busy, but the scenery makes it all worth it. This lake is an alpine gem nestled in the North Cascades. Known for its striking turquoise waters and big backdrop of rugged peaks, the lake offers so much beauty.

The base of Asgard pass is lined with yellow in the fall making for quite the sight! And dont just stop at edge of the lake once you arrive, definitely make your way around to the other end. You might even bump into a mountain goat!

This destination is a must-visit for those seeking spectacular scenery and a rewarding hike. A least once.

Core Enchantments – #13 Best Golden Larch Hikes in Washington

For me, this hike is one of the absolute best fall adventures in Washington State, especially if you’re a larch enthusiast. While it’s also one of the most challenging hikes, the reward is unparalleled.

Like many others, I applied for a permit to backpack in the Enchantments, only to face disappointment due to the highly competitive lottery, with only 2% of applicants securing a permit. However, this setback can actually present an opportunity to opt for a day hike instead.

Despite the challenges, every step of the journey is well worth the effort. October hiking adds a magical touch, transforming the landscape into a golden tapestry. The larches, bathed in vibrant yellow, create a stunning contrast against the rugged mountains and pristine blue lakes, making the scenery absolutely spectacular.

Keep in mind that tackling this trail as a day hike requires significant training and experience. It’s a long and demanding trek, but the breathtaking display of golden larches and autumn beauty makes it an unforgettable experience.

  • Clara + Marion Lakes
  • Esmeralda Basin
